Professor Dr. Mustafizur Rahman, Executive Director

 

Prof. Rahman is an economist by training. He is currently the Executive Director at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), a leading civil society think tank in Bangladesh. Professor Rahman was educated in Moscow State University from where he did his PhD in Development Economics, Oxford University, UK where he was a Visiting Post-doctoral Fellow and Yale University, USA where he was a Senior Fulbright Fellow.

 

Prof. Rahman received the prestigious Ibrahim Memorial Gold Medal of the Dhaka University for excellence in research. His current research interests include:

  • implications of ongoing negotiations in the WTO for the economies of least developed countries,

  • trade related capacity building and aid in the context of LDCs,

  • Bangladesh’s external sector performance and its determinants,

  • regional cooperation and economic integration in South Asia, and

  • trade-poverty nexus.

He has published widely in professional journals both in Bangladesh and abroad and has authored several books and monographs. He has also been a member of various national bodies set up by the Government of Bangladesh (GoB) including WTO Advisory Committee, Committee to Review National Coal Policy and Regulatory Reforms Commission.

 

Prof. Rahman is a member of the National Task Force constituted by the GoB to monitor the impact of global financial crisis on Bangladesh economy and also a member of the Panel of Economists for the Sixth Five Year Plan and Participatory Perspective Plan of Bangladesh.

 

Dr. Rahman is a member of Dhaka University Senate and National University Senate. He is currently on leave from the University of Dhaka where he is a Professor in the Faculty of Business Studies.

Mr Towfiqul Islam Khan, Research Fellow

 

He is an Economist by training and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Bangladesh. He obtained his academic education in the area of Economics from the University of Melbourne, Australia and Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh.

 

Mr. Khan has received Australian Leadership Award (ALA) in 2008 to carry out his post-graduation academic degree in Australia. Khan has undertaken researches for several international organizations including:

  • United Nations Development Programme (UNDP);

  • International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada;

  • Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI), Norway;

  • Overseas Development Institute (ODI), United Kingdom;

  • Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), Germany;

  • ITAD, United Kingdom; and

  • BRAC

His areas of research interest include economic growth and development, international trade, macroeconomic management, fiscal policy, and poverty analysis. Khan was a member of a number of technical committees set up by the Bangladesh government. He has been the Coordinator of CPD’s Independent Review of Bangladesh’s Development (IRBD) Programme since 2009.
